Thea Derks studied musicology at Amsterdam University, and specializes in contemporary music. She lectured on new music in Amsterdam Concertgebouw from 2005-2012, and has moderated pre-concert talks in Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ from its opening in 2005. There she also hosted several contemporary music courses. She advocates women composers, and published the much lauded biography Reinbert de Leeuw: mens of melodie in 2014.
In 2018 Derks published Een os op het dak: moderne muziek na 1900 in vogelvlucht, written for an interested but not versed audience.
In 2020 Reinbert de Leeuw died, and a 3rd edition of the biography was published, including two extra chapters covering his final 6 years. These are also separately available as Slotakkoord: Reinbert de Leeuw 2014-2020.
Derk was a radio reporter for the classical station Radio 4 for 25 years, and from 2014-2018 she hosted the programme Panorama de Leeuw for Concertzender.
From 2018 she presents the monthly programme Een os op het dak on Concertzender.
